Hospital Surgery Department-organized in 1958 at the 2nd surgical, neurosurgical and orthopedic-traumatology departments of the regional hospital. The first Head was Dr. med. Sciences professor. MV Danilenko, who later was appointed head of the department of thoracic surgery Lviv Medical Institute and became rector of the university, academician. From 1960 to 1964 the department was headed by Dr. med. Sciences professor. L.P. Shuliak, for whose guidance department staff worked on the problem of thoracic and vascular surgery, traumatology, portal hypertension and esophageal plastic. From December 1964 to June 1965 served as the head. Department –candidate of Medical Sciences , G.M.Moroz.

From 1965 to August 1987 the department was headed by Dr. of Med. Sciences, professor Y.T. Komorowski.

In these years of pedagogical process were introduced unified methodological system proposed comprehensive system selectionof surgeons. Professor Komorowski successfully worked on the problems of surgical treatment of peptic ulcer disease and stomach operated on, having gained in this field international recognition. During the period of YT Komorowski Department has added experienced teachers and clinicians. In particular, as part of the collective work: Candidat of Medical Sciences Y.YU. Korchynskyi, prof. V.O. Shidlovskyy, prof. I. Ya.Dzyubanovsky, prof. I.K. Wenger, Candidate of Medical Sciences I.I. Basystyuk.

In 1987 the department was headed by Dr. med. Sciences professor. L.Ya. Kovalchuk. With extensive experience in organizational, scientific, educational and clinical activities, he drew attention to the educational process, improving the quality of training of young specialists and expand the scope of research. All this gave new impetus to the improvement of scientific and practical activities of the department. Learning object Surgery Hospital was transferred to the teaching cycle system planned and emergent abdominal, thoracic, vascular, minimally invasive surgery, urology, anesthesiology, surgery and proctology extreme conditions.

Leonid Yakymovych Kovalchuk - author of over 250 scientific papers, including 7 monographs, including "The choice of methods of surgical treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers", "Laparoscopic surgery biliary tract," "Surgery dumping syndrome", "Atlas of surgical interventions on the organs of the gastrointestinal tract and the anterior abdominal wall "," Organ blood circulation with precancerous lesions of the esophagus and stomach, "" Surgery combined and multiple atherosclerotic occlusions of extracranial arteries and aorto-femoral segment, "" venous thrombosis "4 atlases, including" Atlas surgical operations and manipulations " and a number of methodologies, guidelines and 28 inventions. He edited 6 books published, including "Hospital Surgery", "Clinical Surgery", "Emergency Surgery", a number of textbooks. Major work examining the circulation of the stomach and duodenum, developing methods of surgical treatment and prevention in patients with gastro duodenal ulcers, minimally invasive surgery, problems of osteoporosis and effects of small doses of radiation on the immune status of the organism. For the first time in Ukraine under the direction of L. Kovalchuk created multimedia medical program, within which released CD "Laparoscopic surgery biliary tract," "Hospital Surgery", "Anesthesiology and Intensive Care," "Urology". The ideas contained in his doctoral dissertation Leonid Yakymovych on "of regional circulation stomach and duodenum ulcer disease in surgery," formed the basis for a number of theses. In his scientific school - 6 doctors and 28 candidates of medical sciences. L.Ya. Prof. Kovalchuk LY operating Professor L. Since 1997 Leonid Yakymovych - Rector of the Academy, the founder and chief editor of "Hospital Surgery". In 2004 L.Ya Kovalchuk was elected a corresponding member of NAMS of Ukraine.

In 2010, edited by Cor. NAMS of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science i Technology of Ukraine, Dr. med. Sciences professor. L.Ya. Kovalchuk was published textbook for medical universities of III-IV accreditation level "surgery" volume of 1056 s. Created by a team of leading scientists and at the same time practicing surgeons, filled with the most advanced health information and well illustrated, this publication does not have analogues in Ukraine. In 2010 he defended his doctoral dissertation was on "Prevention and treatment of complications of surgery for gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer." From 2010 - Head of the Department of Surgery №1. In December 2011 Anatoly Dmitrievich awarded the academic title of professor. Bedenyuk A.D. is the author of 138 scientific publications, the owner of 19 patents for inventions and innovations. In 1990 he defended his thesis on "Justification and efficacy of antimicrobial biocompatible connections in lung surgery" .In 1995 Vitaly Vasilyevich awarded the rank of associate professor. He is the author and co-author of 38 scientific papers, participated in writing the textbook "Hospital Surgery", "Atlas of Surgical Operations and manipulation." Currently position –the head of the department of thoracic surgery of Ternopil University Hospital

Since September 1991 an assistant, and from January 1996 - worked as assistant professor candidate V.I. Maksymlyuk. In 1991 he defended his thesis on "Determining the volume gastrectomy surgery in gastric ulcers" in 2008- doctoral thesis on "Morphofunctional criteria when choosing surgical treatment of complicated forms of cholelithiasis." Over the years at the department was published 68 scientific papers, author of 10 inventions. In September 1998 he was transferred to the post of assistant professor of Surgery Department Of Posgraduate Studding.Now he holds the position of Professor of Surgery №1, also the Chief Surgeon of Health Department of Ternopil Regional State Administration.

From September 1994 to January 1997 served as assistant chair I.I. Lukasevych. In 1995 he defended his thesis on "The prognosis and surgical treatment of bleeding gastric ulcers taking into account the performance of the gastroduodenal circulation." From 1995 to 2002 as assistant worked O.M .Gusak. In 1998 he defended his thesis on "The impact of emotional pain factor on gastric blood flow in the surgical treatment of peptic ulcer."He conducts practical lessons from the cycle “Proctology”, Is the author of 24 scientific papers, participated in writing the textbook "Hospital Surgery", "Atlas of Surgical Operations and manipulations", creating multimedia CD. Since 2002 year- assistant professor of Surgery №1, Head of the Surgical Department of University Hospital".

From 1997 to 1999 as assistant worked O Beregovyy,he defended his thesis on "Criteria for surgical treatment of patients with gastroduodenal ulcers with concomitant pathology of the upper gastrointestinal tract." He is the author of 14 scientific papers, co-author of the book "The choice of methods of surgical treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers", took part in the writing of the "Atlas of Surgical Operations and manipulation."

In September 1998 I.S. Kulyanda worked as assistant . In 1997 he defended his thesis on "Evaluation of the use of lyophilized ksenodermotransplantants in treatment of patients with burns." Since 1999, Igor - Assistant Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology, nateper- professor.

In March 1999, as assistant of the department worked V.V. Shkrobot. His PhD thesis is devoted to problems of application organ operations in the treatment of peptic ulcer. He was author of 14 scientific papers, co-author of a manual for medical students and medical interns "Atlas of Surgical Operations and manipulation", was one inventor's certificate. Since 2002 - Chief doctor of Ternopil Regional Municipal Clinical Psycho-Neurological Hospital.

After graduation in december 1999, worked as assistant c A.Y. Hospodarskyy .In 2000 he defended his thesis on "Prediction of duodenal bleeding and choice of surgical treatment of duodenal ulcers." Engaged in the introduction of computer technology in clinical practice. He is the author of 17 scientific papers, co-author of "Atlas of surgical operations and manipulations." In December 2000, worked as assistant A.R.Wajda. PhD thesis on "Pathogenetic substantiation of surgical correction of hemodynamic abnormalities in liver with obstructive jaundice" defended in 2000, as assistant chair of oncology. Is the author of 42 publications and 8 inventions. Scientific direction - optimization of results of surgical treatment in patients with vascular disorders and liver.

In May 2000, took the position of assistant candidate of the department O.L Kovalchuk. He defended his thesis on "Comparative characteristics of skin recovery in patients with burns." He is the author of 114 papers (with them- educational-methodical 14-, 71- in professional journals) 10 inventions, co-author of 3 books, 4 books and 4 monographs in chysli- "Laparoscopic surgery of biliary tract" and the textbooks "Hospital Surgery" "Clinical Surgery", "Nursing in surgery." The main focus of work is laproscopic surgery (surgery of biliary tract, histerorezektoscopia, gynecological, transurethral and thoracoscopic surgery).. It is the participation of O.L. Associate Professor V.B. Dobrorodniy in 1990 defended his thesis on "Comparative characteristics of nonsorbtive synthetic sutures and synthetic of antibacterial sutures in abdominal surgery." He is the author and co-author of 50 scientific papers on emergent and planned abdominal surgery and surgery of the thyroid gland, author of two inventions in surgery. Field of research interests- new methods of diagnosis and treatment of surgical pathology of thyroid .

I.I .Chonka in 1996 defended his thesis on "Hydrolysis and absorption of carbohydrates in patients with thyrotoxic goiter and their correction at stages of surgical treatment." He is the author and co-author of 63 scientific works, 15 inventions in surgery. Author of books: "Prevention and treatment of surgical complications of diabetes," "Formula of life", "My sincere wish to see you healthy." He received the title of "Best Inventor of Ternopil region". To date, successfully working on the problem of treatment of diabetic foot syndrome in diabetics and treatment of venous ulcers of venous origin.

Since 2001 at the department is working Futuyma Y.M, who for two years worked as a senior laboratory assistant. In 2007 he defended his thesis on "Indications and contraindications to perform aim resection of gastric ischemic segment - predicting early and long-term results," an assistant Department of Surgery №1. Since 2011 –assistant professor. Field of research interests- modern methods of treatment of peptic ulcer, diseases of the hepatobiliary system. Also deals with treatment of proctology disorders and diabetic foot syndrome in patients with diabetes.

Since 2008, as an assistant department works Smachylo I.I. In January 2008, he defended PhD thesis on "Correction ishemic- reperfusion liver damage in patients with obstructive jaundice." Currently working on improving techniques of minimally invasive puncture drainage of fluid masses abdomen and liver diseases hepato-pankreatobiliarnoyi system.

In 2011, the Department of Surgery № 1 together with the National Institute of Surgery and Transplantation by. OO Shalimov completed work on interdisciplinary clinical recommendations "Venous thromboembolism: diagnosis, treatment, prevention." The work on the principles of evidence-based medicine group dedicated surgical pathologies with high probability of postoperative a period of deep vein thrombosis. After graduate in 2011, staff of the Department of Surgery №1 added a candidate assistant Yakymchuk O.A. (thesis: "Prevention system-inflammatory and reperfusion complications in patients after reconstructive surgery on the basis of chronic critical ischemia") and the assistant Bodnar P.Y. (thesis: "Direct and indirect revascularization with thigh-ankle-popliteal occlusion in conditions of chronic critical ischemia").

Clinic Surgery Department staff developed new methods of research of regional circulation esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Implemented new types of surgery for stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers. Studied ischemic-reperfusion damage to the liver after bile duct decompression in patients with obstructive jaundice, defined the relationship between the severity of reperfusion injury in patients. As for the prospects of development of research, the following objectives: to identify the main causes and conditions of development of deep vein thrombosis and embolism in patients undergoing surgery to improve the safety of surgery; explore the possibilities of stem cell transplantation in the treatment of lower limb ischemia in obliterating diseases of lower limb arteries; treatment abdominal aortic aneurysm ekstravascular method - arthroplasty; vasorenal surgical treatment of hypertension - endovascular stenting. Continued development and introduction into clinical practice of new methods of diagnosis and surgery on the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, bodies hepatopancreatobiliar zones, small and large intestine, organs of the endocrine system.
